Fear Of Failure - Random Thoughts

How often have you thought of doing something out of your comfort zone only to stop and think to yourself, no I can’t do that, I’m not very good at it.

Why? Why do we doom ourselves to failure before we even start?

I do it because I have an expectation that I must be “perfect” right out of the gate. When I say perfect, I don’t expect to be an expert right away but I expect to be at least passable. Doesn’t matter if I haven’t picked up a paint brush in 15 years, I better be able to paint a passable landscape right away.

Two years ago I started an Ultimate team made entirely out of beginners (save one or two that had played a little). It was a challenge convincing people to play but being that everyone was brand new there was an understanding that everyone was going to be bad. It’s funny that failure as a group seems more acceptable to people than failure as an individual. Understandable I guess.

Long story short, we won our division… two years in a row. Don’t get me wrong, some people picked up the game faster than others but we won both years because we played as a team using all our good parts and all our not so good parts. Being bad helped us learn faster and also helped us develop strategies that the other teams had never seen before. All because we added our own unique imperfections.

Moral of the story - Try approaching failure as if you’re doing it with a group of people and don’t worry if you come up short. At least you’ll have learned something along the way.

That’s my rant for the day.

Tarp Surfing - Pura Plastic?

This could be my favorite video I’ve seen in a while. Not because of the way it was shot or anything particularly amazing about the footage. It’s my favorite because it takes a seemingly simple idea and turns it into something completely different.

That’s imagination at its best.

Faced with the challenge of small waves, these guys decided to create their own pipe experience. I tip my hat to you fine gentlemen.

The Sartorialist Visualized

Intel is putting on a contest/promotion about showing the visual side of your life. The contest aside, I think the story of the Sartorialist is captured beautifully in this short film. I love what he says about not setting out to become a photographer, he just went out and did it.

Words to live by.
